LEGO Mobile Designer for Nintendo 3DS & other devices is a project on LEGO CUUSOO created by Frankie on September 2nd, 2011. The idea is to have the LEGO Digital Designer software on several portable devices, renamed "LEGO Mobile Designer." It is the most supported LEGO CUUSOO project that is not actually made of LEGO bricks.

The systems the software is intended for are:

  • 3DS
  • Android
  • iPhone
  • PSVita
  • iPad

Portable version of the LEGO Digital Designer software for Nintendo 3DS (and iPhone, iPad, PSP/PS Vita or Android devices).

New creations from other users could be downloadable to the device, as new official LEGO sets (in this case the App would be used like an interactive digital catalog).

The 3DS upper screen would be used to display the model in 3D ("controlled" with the circle pad) while the lower one, with multitouch, will zoom in the area you are working to make it easier to build on small screen device. The selection of each Lego block would be through a flip menus (like slot machine) controlled with the stylus (with additional navigation provided by the cross Dpad). The stylus would be used also for placing the selected part. This would be they key difference with LEGO CAD programs for PCs and make the virtual building experience more similar to play with "real" LEGO.

Mobile Designer "Micro scale" LEGO special sets:

it will be possible to buy LEGO "Micro scale" sets in the toy stores so that software users will be able to have the bricks needed to build a real version of their Micro scale virtual creations. These sets will let users having fun with LEGO without the need to shop around for parts they used in the virtual build. These sets will be focused on "Micro scale" to keep costs down and to make the building on LEGO Mobile Designer as much intuitive as possibile (this style of building is perfect for the small size of mobile devices). There will be different "Micro scale" sets (like "space" or "city").

To make things easier and simpler, the whole "LEGO Mobile Designer" project could even be focused on "Micro scale" for a better handling and display of LEGO blocks on smaller mobile devices screens.

Additional functions:

Users will also be able to register the standard LEGO sets they bought using the 3DS camera to scan the barcode on the box. The LEGO pieces will be automatically added to the software database so that user can choose to be able to uses only the bricks he really got.

Minifig Collection: put a minifig in front of the camera and the sofware will recognize it, add it to your collection with some info and let you use it in your projects.

LEGO Channel: in this area there are news, previews of future LEGO sets and Designer Interview videos (eventually shooted with a 3D camera).

Mobile Cuusoo: let users browse, vote and upload new projects directly to the LEGO Cuusoo social network.

+ AR function: "if you can't find a piece in the palette, you could point your device's camera at a real LEGO element, and it would find it for you." by OleGandalf

The camera could also be used for mosaics (take photos of real objects/people and get a basic lego version of it to work on) or like a portable version of the LEGO AR Kiosks (users could scan the barcodes of sets they purchased and keep their LEGO collection in the pocket).

LEGO Streetpass would let users to exchange LEGO blocks on the go maybe with a Rock-paper-scissors like mini-game to battle against other LEGO Mobile Designer owners.

Congratulations on achieving over 500 supporters!

The idea of extending LEGO design software to mobile devices has been kicked around, and it's interesting that you are considering it for Nintendo DS and not just touch screen phones. Your project here is just a basic idea. As such, we encourage you to flesh out the concept a bit more. If you were designing a mobile interface for LEGO design software, how would you do it? What capabilities are most important to you? How would you use multi-touch or the 3DS interface to move and place the parts? So, that is our challenge to you: start to distill what is important in such an environment and how you would approach it.

Best of luck on your journey to 10,000 supporters!
