STAR WARS DARK BUCKET is an Archived project on LEGO CUUSOO created by haru on November 4th, 2011.  The project was rejected due to license complications.

The project originally aimed to allow builders to build and display/play with 99 Storm Troopers and one Darth Vader figure (characters from the Star Wars series). Eventually, the project evolved to have different types of the Storm Trooper. Then, due to reasons stated below, the project yet again evolved into the Dark Bottle.

The Dark Bucket was the center of some controversy, as many urged haru to add some sort of brick-built creation to the bucket. Lucasfilm's license with Hasbro, giving them the exclusive right to "Star Wars action figures," prevented LEGO from releasing sets containing only minifigures. The concept of the Dark Bucket violated that license. Soon after it reached 10,000, haru offered an alternative, a "Dark Bottle" consisting of 16 Stormtroopers and Darth Vader marching in front of the brick-built STAR WARS logo. But LEGO, of course, took the project that had been voted on into Review, disregarding the Dark Bottle completely.

STAR WARS DARK BUCKET

Especially useful for building scenes of STAR WARS with LEGO, and most likely a dream come true for those who wish to have 100 minifigure Storm Troopers to play with! This DARK BUCKET contains 99 Storm Troopers and one black-chrome Darth Vader. I just think that the sheer number of Troopers will add jaw dropping awesomeness into any STAR WARS creation, and ultimately motivate you to start creating something with LEGO!

I also wish that these little troops could actually promote some form of “peaceful” mission, like in Operation Tomodachi, whereby the United States Armed Forces carried out rescue operations to assist Japan in 2011 during the 3.11 disaster. I want to donate ALL royalties (if this set manage to achieve the target of 10,000 votes) to children in Fukushima, or any other children charity organization for that matter.

I am sure many of you out there have lots of good ideas to improve on this bucket, so any ideas or comments are welcome!

Let’s do good with minifig bad guys! Your vote counts in helping us to realize this ultimate LEGO bucket!

DB1 Thank you for your support and comment! As some of you mentioned, we wish if we could have more trooper characters in Dark Bucket. What if the bucket containts Storm Troopers, Sand Troopers, Scout Troopers, Snow Troopers, Tie Pilots, AT-AT Pilots, and one Darth Vader? Maybe the number of Storm Trooper depends on the final price. It would be nice if two of Storm Trooper could be Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. What's the best combination of minifig characters for Dark Bucket? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! DB2

STAR WARS DARK BOTTLE

I reduced the number of trooper minifig to realize a reasonable price, and add a buildable display base with SW logo to make this product can be sold as a construction toy. You can enjoy displaying cute marching troopers on your desk or shelf. Maybe a bottle or small box is better for it.

Thank you for your support!!!!!!!

Congratulatory message from LEGO for +500 votes

2012.02.08

Congratulations on all of the support! This is awesome, we love this idea! It's obvious that dedicated Star Wars fans would buy this. A bucket of 100 minifigs would cost around $3-400, but we don't think LEGO Star Wars fans would have a problem paying that. ;-) Keep going for the supporters. Since Star Wars is licensed to us by Lucas, they will have to be on board with such a product, and we'll take that up with them if this reaches 10,000.

Congratulatory message from LEGO for +5000 votes

Dear haru,

Congratulations on passing this milestone of 5,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO for the Star Wars Dark Bucket. You're halfway there!

This is a (very) fun concept, but since we have the construction toy license and not the action figure license for Star Wars, it will not be possible to release a set consisting solely of minifigures. If the Dark Bucket concept were to go further, it would need to include some significant brick-based model component to be considered a construction toy for licensing purposes.

Also, since a collection of 100 minifgures would be quite expensive and limit the set's market potential, we think it's best to focus on smaller collections of figs.

Best wishes as you continue on your journey to achieving 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO.

Decision on Our Ability to Produce this Project

2012.06.08

First and foremost, huge congratulations to haru for reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO, and toward everyone for all of the support of the Star Wars Dark Bucket project!

LEGO Star Wars is very popular, and we're well aware that many people want to amass large armies of Star Wars minifigures. Our team has done our due diligence, and due to our license we will not release a collection consisting almost entirely of minifigures. Since the 10,000 supporters came for this specific concept, we will not alter the project in the review. Therefore we will not consider the Star Wars Dark Bucket further for production. We're sorry to be the bearers of this disappointing news.

The challenge with allowing IP-related projects on LEGO CUUSOO is that there is the potential of a license conflict, either with an existing license or with a competitive licensor. Still, it's our view that it is better to be open and allow for possibilities, knowing there will be "no" answers along the way, than shut out the potential of IP-based products altogether.

Since we already knew the answer in this case, we decided to share the news now rather than wait until the Fall LEGO Review under which this project would qualify. Opening ourselves to new product suggestions invites popular ideas that don't always work. We are grateful for the spirit behind projects like the Star Wars Dark Bucket and for the opportunity to be challenged. It keeps us sharp and looking toward the future of the LEGO brick.
