FTL: Faster Than Light is a Achieved project on LEGO CUUSOO created by CrashSanders, who is collaborating with GlenBricker. It was created on February 11th, 2013. The project is based off the computer game of the same name. In its first week on LEGO CUUSOO, it achieved 2,000 supporters, an unusual feat. It reached 10,000 supporters on July 31st, 2013. Two days after reaching 10,000, the project's comment section was closed down.

Project Content

The project is centered on providing various minifigures and ship models, of which LEGO will produce three ship models. More detailed info about the project can be found here.

The full list of models/minfigures includes:

  • The Kestrel
  • Stealth Cruiser (Engi)
  • Mantis Cruiser
  • Engi Cruiser
  • Slug Cruiser
  • Crystal
  • Engi
  • Zoltan
  • Human officers
  • Slug
  • Rockman
  • Mantis

However, only three will be produced, and these three were decided by votes:

  1. The Kestrel
  2. The Osprey
  3. The Gila Monster

Go check our launch page for a more pictures of the crew and our other projects.

************************************************************************************************************ Attention! We have determined the set format: three ships with no additional content (i.e. figures and such). The Kestrel is one of them without any hesitations. But other two are up to you. The previous poll is finished and the Osprey will be the second after the Kestrel. Now we are standing before a dilemma: the Torus or Gila Monster?. Vote for your favorite to see them in the final set! And don't forget to support, vote and spread the word!

************************************************************************************************************ What is Cuusoo? There is a small but definite chance that you have happened upon this page without knowing what the Cuusoo website is.

Cuusoo is a site where people submit ideas for new Lego sets. If the project can get 10,000 Supporters then Lego will review the projected. If Lego likes the idea, and can get permission from the IP holders, then they will create their own version of project and mass produce it to make it available to you.

So, if you want your very own FTL Lego ships, then please create an account and support this project! If you are really serious about wanting it then make sure to spread the word to other people who might support. **********************************************************************

FTL: Faster Than Light is a rogue-like indie video game developed by Matthew Davis and Justin Ma, also known as Subset Games team, which brings player to the edge of a conflict between remnants of Galactic Federation and a huge Rebel Fleet. A small ship called The Kestrel has some critical information about Rebels and must deliver it to the allied forces encamped just a few sectors away from it's current position. But Rebels are already on a pursuit so there's no time to waste! Onward to the great unknown!

Your task as a player is to take control of a ship's crew and lead them to the target. You must jump from waypoint to waypoint in order to reach the exit beacon that leads to the next sector. Every waypoint is a random event, some unexpected encounter. It could be Rebel pilotless scout sneaking around in search of you, or a trader, or maybe a random weapon just floating in the space! The main difficulty is the rebel fleet which comes closer with each jump you make.

Every decision is critical.

You can upgrade your ship, hire or acquire during events new crewmembers, and obtain new weapons. Spend your only currency - scrap metal - wisely, because you will never know what will happen after the jump.

This is FTL as I love it. I spent hours playing, trying again and again, and only once did I make it to the victory. FTL: Faster Than Light is a great game that I recommend to everyone I know. Such a love deserves a proper contribution.

So firstly I made The Kestrel Itself and posted it on the official FTL forums. I received many warm comments from the community so I decided to make another model. That's when the FTL devs contacted me. Justin Ma wanted to make a few real Kestrel’s copies by himself, but I told both Justin and Matthew that we could try to make a CUUSOO project so The Kestrel will have a chance to be officially released as a set. It will bring more FTL fans to LEGO and vice versa. And they agreed, allowing me to make a project and promised some community support.

Also I asked GlenBricker for help and he agreed, becoming my collaborator. So for all renders, custom decals and Mantis species model I must thank this respectful man.

This project is under supervision of Subset Games team. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in comments.

Spreading the Word

The faster a project reaches 10k, the more seriously it is taken by the community. The current review deadline is March 4th. Given the expansive fan base of FTL, the required 10,000 supporters should be easy to acquire by then, but only if you can help us get the word out.

If you seriously want to hold a Kestrel in your hands than please, take action and join the Campaign

************************************************************************************************************ Why not making ships bigger?

I am just tired of people who come and ask me why I intend this exact scale and nothing bigger, and frequently ticking me off with their unwillingness to read the comments below to discover lots of useful information. So for your own good I am putting here a link to Glen's article about "FTL: Why not make them bigger". http://blog.brick-hero.com/p/ftl-why-not-make-them-bigger.html Just please, read it carefully and save our time and neural cells.

Hi CrashSanders and GlenBricker,

Congratulations on 5,000+ supporters for your project, FTL: Faster Than Light!

Your ships have character and they are well built. The designs would translate well into official LEGO sets. Plus, this project has enjoyed a good run so far thanks to passionate FTL fans.

Remember that LEGO CUUSOO is set up to produce individual sets. Check out #6 on the post Cheat Sheet: How to Pass the LEGO Review with Flying Colors. If your project reaches 10,000 supporters, we would naturally attempt to focus on a single product as a candidate for release, whether it be one ship, a ship with a character, or a collection of ships. So, you might wish to choose which model is your priority for being produced, or recommend a way that your work could be released in a single set.

Best wishes as you continue on your journey to achieving 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO.

Here we are, after only 6 months! While this project didn’t travel at the speed of light, it didn’t do bad for itself either. Okay, lame jokes aside, the fan community that sprung up around this project is really inspiring. Watching LEGO fans come together to work on this project and support it has really made us proud of the LEGO CUUSOO Community!

Of course, these little ships have a great collectability and history has proven that LEGO CUUSOO projects based on video games can have huge appeal.

What happens now? This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A "LEGO Review Board" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The LEGO Review Begins in September This project qualifies for the quarterly review beginning in September. For more information about the quarterly review process, see this blog post.

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a "go/no go" decision to develop and sell a product based on the “FTL: Faster than Light” concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.

We will post follow-up information and our decision here.
